Looking for ways to save money on summer vacations? Over the years I’ve developed a simple strategy that regularly cuts my travel costs by 50% or more without sacrificing the experience. By staying flexible, booking vacation rentals at the last minute, and focusing on low-cost activities, I’ve been able to enjoy amazing trips for a fraction of what most travelers spend.
1. How Flexible Travel Helps Save Money on Summer Vacations
The biggest mistake people make is deciding on one exact destination and one exact property months in advance.
Instead, create a list of several places you’d be happy visiting. Flexibility gives you leverage when it comes time to book.
For example, if you’re considering a mountain getaway, have three or four different towns in mind rather than just one. The more flexible you are, the more opportunities you’ll find.
2. Save Money on Summer Vacations With Last-Minute Rentals
My favorite money-saving tactic is booking an Airbnb or VRBO about one week before the trip.
At that point, many property owners are facing the possibility of earning nothing if their property sits empty. A discounted booking is often better than no booking at all.
I send messages to 20 or more properties on both Airbnb and VRBO and ask if they would consider a discounted rate. I typically offer 50% to 65% of the listed price.
Most owners will decline, but a few will often accept or counteroffer. That’s all you need.
This strategy has allowed me to stay in vacation homes that would normally be far outside my budget.

3. Choose Free Activities
I’m a nature lover, so most of my vacation entertainment costs very little.
Some of my favorite activities include:
- Hiking local trails
- Visiting state and national parks
- Swimming in lakes and rivers
- Exploring scenic drives and viewpoints
- Walking through small towns and local markets
Many of my most memorable vacation experiences have been completely free.
I also check Groupon before every trip for discounts on local attractions and activities.. You can often find significant savings on tours, activities, restaurants, and local experiences.
4. Cook Your Own Meals
One of the biggest advantages of renting a house or apartment is having access to a full kitchen.
Instead of eating every meal at restaurants, I buy groceries and cook most of my meals at the rental. This alone can reduce food costs by 75% or more compared to dining out for every meal.
For a family, the savings can easily reach hundreds of dollars over a week-long trip.
If you want to experience local restaurants, consider visiting during happy hour when many places offer discounted food and drinks.
5. Look for Other Ways to Save During Summer
